5 Benefits of Celery Juice

Before we jump into the benefits of drinking celery juice, let’s just remind ourselves that the evidence we’re basing this on is mainly anecdotal, that’s to say, it’s based on the myriad benefits that everyone around the world on the celery juice train is experiencing - and from our own personal experience. Whilst we fully appreciate that there is a severe lack of scientific evidence when it comes to the health claims of celery juice, (that’s not to say that there’s none, just that it’s not deemed representative by the medical profession), we cannot ignore how amazing it’s making us all feel. We’re of the opinion that just because there’s no study to back something up (yet), is no reason to knock it; especially when we’re talking about a glass of harmless vegetable juice! By definition, it has to be good right? We’re all about that veg!

  1. Calms Inflammation

Research shows that phytochemicals in celery can help reduce blood pressure and inflammation, as well as the fight against oxidative stress. But you can reap these benefits from eating celery, as well as juicing it.

  1. Improves Digestion

The evidence relating to improved digestion is anecdotal but essentially based on the fact that many of us are experiencing reduced IBS symptoms, less bloating and generally smoother digestion. The Medical Medium attributes this to celery’s ability to increase the body’s production of stomach acid (needed to break down food).

  1. Skin Health

Improved digestion and a reduction in inflammation could be the reason why those on the celery juice bandwagon are experiencing improvements in skin tone (for those of us with no skin complaints), or a drastic improvement in chronic skin conditions for those of us with conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. You can head to Instagram for some incredible before and after pictures, but we’d caution you that these are in the context of a healthy diet and lifestyle generally. As ever, health is about the big picture - it doesn’t come from an isolated brush stroke.

Potassium and Sodium

In particular, the minerals potassium and sodium are the electrolytes responsible for hydration, making celery juice an excellent choice for a post-workout drink (or to cure a hangover!). Moreover, it’s very likely that the reason we’re all feeling so great on this stuff is because we’re drinking it first thing in the morning, when our bodies have been starved of fluids all night, and so by hydrating ourselves thoroughly with a big dose of water, minerals and salts we are naturally feeling fantastic first thing.

  1. Full of flavonoids

Flavonoids are a group of metabolites that act a bit like antioxidants. One study from 2014 found that the flavonoids in celery had a beneficial impact on health with a view to preventing chronic diseases. We are well aware of the beneficial impact of a diet rich in antioxidants for humans, but it’s important to note that this study was carried out on mice. Still, if celery juice is a high-quality source of antioxidants that can potentially have a protective effect on our liver, heart, kidneys and other major organs - then we’re all in, bring on the green juice.
