I think we can determine a lot from the fact that Microsoft Word didn’t recognise the title of this blog post as a correctly spelt word, instead it’s flagged it up with a red squiggly line underneath it. Upon right clicking to correct the obvious misdemeanour, “no spelling suggestions” is the only redemptive solution. So despite the obvious and widespread ignorance of adaptogens, and safe in the knowledge that we have spelt it right, let’s discuss the health benefits of this relatively new (to you and I), player in the superfood game.

 Firstly, what actually are adaptogens? You might be familiar with maca, popping it in your morning smoothie or ordering it as an extra at your favourite healthy café, and be vaguely aware that it’s beneficial in some way, but what is it and what is it actually doing to your body? Well, adaptogens tend to be ancient or Ayurvedic (again, no spelling suggestions here) herbs that are ground into powders. They help your body adapt to biological and psychological stress by making it easier for you to balance your hormonal systems. Some adaptogens can also help with those ever present 21st Century induced symptoms such as stress and fatigue.

 Boosts the immune system, helps with energy levels and contains all the essential amino acids – so it’s a great one to add to your post work out smoothie.

 Holy Basil (or Tulsi)

If you’re going to include any of these into your daily routine, make sure you listen to your body – if something doesn’t feel right don’t keep going with it just because it’s supposed to be good for you, everyone’s different after all!
