It’s 4 pm. You're tired, your brain is slagging, and you can't think of anything to do that will make the rest of the day go by any faster. Sound familiar?

I know how you feel - it's like a fog has descended over your brain and nothing seems interesting anymore. If only there was could do to snap out of this funk!

Well, luckily for us, there are plenty of things we can do in order to get back on track when we find ourselves in this dreaded afternoon slump!

Beating the afternoon's blues

The best way to deal with the afternoon slump is to prevent it from happening in the first place! There are a few things you can do to help set yourself up for success:

Get enough sleep

This one should be obvious, but many of us still try to push through the day when we're running on too little sleep. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day to help regulate your body's natural sleep rhythm.

You may also want to consider creating a pre-sleep ritual in order to make yourself tired by the time you go to bed. Try reading a book, doing some yoga or meditation, or any other activities you enjoy that will help you take the edge off.

Keep your stress load reasonable.

Stress is one of the most common causes of afternoon slumps. If you find yourself feeling anxious or overwhelmed at work, take a step back and try to analyze where your stress is coming from. Is there something specific that triggered this stress? Can you make any changes within your immediate surroundings to help reduce it?

Or, perhaps you feel stressed because of all the things you have on your plate - whether that's dealing with relationships, academics, or other projects. Give yourself some breathing room by de-stressing your schedule. Cut down on obligations that are non-essential, and focus on completing the most important tasks first.

Balance your blood sugar

Burning through all that energy will require you to eat well, but that doesn't mean depriving yourself! Maintain a healthy diet by including lots of fruits and veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and healthy fats in order to keep your brain fueled up with the nutrients it needs.

Eat balanced meals throughout the day - especially breakfast and lunch. Have a healthy breakfast to give you enough fuel for the day. Try to eat greens and healthy fats as well as foods that can regulate your blood sugar. It'll boost your energy and nutrients to start your day off on the right foot.

If you're not sure what an ideal day of eating might look like, here are some tips to keep in mind.

  • Eat balanced meals - Make sure you eat sufficient amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water.
  • Avoid processed foods - Lots of packaged foods contain refined sugars or other ingredients that will make you crash later.
  • Eat more greens! - It's best to get your nutrients from whole foods, and vegetables are a great way to do that.
  • Have healthy fats - This helps keep you feeling full and provides energy for your brain. Try incorporating things like avocado, nuts, and seeds into your diet.
  • Avoid drinking your calories - Sugary drinks can quickly offset all the healthy eating you're doing. Stick to water, unsweetened tea or coffee, and occasional low-sugar juices or smoothies.

You can always opt for a healthy snack as well. Now, you don't want to go overboard and eat a whole cake (that would defeat the point!), but eating a healthy snack can definitely provide an energy boost. Try some fresh fruit or veggies with hummus or another savory dip.

These tips should give you a good starting point, but remember that everyone's body is different. If you find that you're not feeling well after eating a certain way, it might be time to experiment a little bit until you find something that works for you. And as always, don't forget to talk to a doctor or nutritionist if you have any specific concerns.

When The Slump Hits...

If you're already feeling the effects of the afternoon slump, there are still a few things you can do to try and perk yourself up.

Try Getting Some Exercise - Even if you only have time for a short walk outside or around the office after lunch for 10 min, taking some time out during the day can do wonders for your energy levels. Exercise is also scientifically proven to improve concentration and alertness, so it will help you stay focused when you really need it.

#Tip: Walking or exercising is always good, but when you do it after eating, your body will use the glucose you've just consumed, so it will help flatten the glucose curve.

Also, if you like having a cup of coffee in the afternoon, this could be exactly what you need to get back on track. This one is a no-brainer for most people. However, even though caffeine can help to increase energy levels temporarily, it's important to note that it's best consumed in small doses. Excessive caffeine can have negative effects like restlessness, anxiety, and irritability.

If you're looking for an alternative to caffeine, try drinking ginger tea. Ginger has been shown to have stimulant properties and can help improve energy levels. It also has a soothing effect, so it's perfect for those times when you're feeling frazzled.

For those days when it seems like all of this isn't enough and you just can't shake off that afternoon slump? Try power napping for 5-20 minutes. It's been shown to be one of the most effective ways to combat fatigue during the day without having any negative effects on your nighttime sleep cycle.

Mediation can also be a great way to recharge if you only have a little bit of time. Taking just 5-10 minutes to meditate and clear your mind can be enough to make a big difference. You can try some breathing techniques like pranayama (a yogic practice) that will help clear your mind and relax the body.
