What is coffee doing to your brain?

Let’s talk coffee. And not just the generic “coffee boosts your metabolism”, “it can help you lose weight”, blah, blah, blah. We’re here to talk to you about coffee’s effect on your brain. How is it helpful? How is it not?

What happens in the brain after we’ve chugged down our morning brew?

Well it’s all got to do with Adenosine. Adenosine is a neurotransmitter known for making us feel lethargic. It builds up over the day causing a “sleep pressure” [1]. Now this is a good thing, it helps us get to sleep at night. But, what if we’re feeling tired and have got a mountain of work to do? We reach for coffee. Caffeine latches on the adenosine receptors, stopping us from feeling tired… great!

What about sleep?

The effects of caffeine can last an incredible amount of time. We’re sure you’ve all swigged down your flat white and felt a burst of energy 20 minutes later but what you probably don’t know, is that the half-life of coffee (the amount of time it takes for the body to remove half of the drug from your system) is 5-7 hours [1]. So, whilst it may be great to boost your energy, watch how late you’re drinking your coffee. We’re all different, we all metabolise substances at different rates, so listen to your body and know what works for you.

What’s a caffeine crash and how do you avoid it?

Your liver finally breaks down the caffeine you had an hour or so ago and BOOM, the adenosine that was being blocked thanks to caffeine hits you like a wall. [2] This part of the brain is responsible for many things, but one being emotional regulation [5], the more dopamine, the better, right?

Should your coffee be organic?

Yaaaas. Of course it should. Actually, many of us buy organic food but don’t consider the fact that coffee is a crop too and of course it’s sprayed just like everything else. In fact, coffee is one of the hardest crops to grow and as such, growers use lots of pesticides and fertilisers to help it along. The toxic residues from these chemicals end up in your morning latte, so why have a regular coffee when you can go organic?
